3D Scanning of an Industrial Facility in Laverton, Victoria

Introduction

The objective was to capture an industrial facility’s interior layout and crane rails to produce a 3D model for precise measurements and analysis. A leading industrial organization, Infrabuild, engaged Avian Australia to perform a detailed 3D survey of their facility, a complex and challenging environment.

The goal was to accurately map the facility’s interior layout, including critical crane rails, and deliver high-quality, actionable 3D data. This would allow the client to analyse the facility’s layout for maintenance, upgrades, and operational improvements.

Challenges

This project presented unique challenges due to:

  • Difficult-to-access positions: The facility’s layout and existing plant/equipment, particularly the overhead crane rails, required surveying in areas that were difficult to access and position our equipment.
  •  Dangerous environment: Working within an industrial site meant strict safety protocols and careful coordination with site personnel.
  • Complex site conditions and limited access: The facility’s operations restricted survey access times, and the survey team had to work within a condensed timeframe to minimise disruption to maintenance works.

Avian Australia’s Solution

Avian Australia employed advanced 3D laser scanning technology, which enabled remote data capture with exceptional precision. Using high-resolution, multiple laser scanners, Avian’s team mapped the entire interior layout and overhead crane rails without requiring extensive manual measurements in hazardous positions. The data was then processed into a consolidated point cloud and converted into 3D DWG models for easy reference.

Deliverables

  • Consolidated Point Cloud: Provided a comprehensive, digital view of the facility’s interior layout, including an existing exterior cloud, capturing every detail for easy inspection and future analysis and planning.
  • 3D DWG Models: These high-quality models allowed the client to make accurate measurements confidently, analyse spatial dimensions, and plan upgrades or maintenance tasks.
  • Site Analysis Report: Included insights on spatial configurations and operational efficiency, assisting the client in planning for both current needs and future expansion.

Results:

With Avian Australia’s 3D survey, the client received a complete, precise 3D model of their facility’s interior, including critical crane rail measurements, all achieved in a fraction of the time required by traditional methods. The data facilitated immediate decision-making for operational improvements and provided a robust foundation for long-term planning, maintenance, and safety enhancements.

Avian Australia helped this industrial client shape their facility’s project planning while ensuring a safe, efficient, and minimally disruptive 3D survey process.
